Photographs from 'Starfish', Theatre of Debate ® workshop 2008
'Starfish' was developed and delivered by Y Touring in partnership with the Association of Medical Research Charities and supported by the Wellcome Trust and Central YMCA. It was developed to increase informed debate about the need for clinical trials, and the ethical issues that surround them.
The process of creating 'Starfish' relied upon the in-put of various experts from an advisory group made up
of: Sir Iain Chalmers, Dr David Tovey, Professor Simon Wessely , Lester Firkins, David Kaskel, Professor Max Parmar, Professor Janet Darbyshire, and Dr Sophie Petit-Zeman.
The advisory group was invited, along with young people from local schools, other stakeholders and Judith Johnson, to participate in a workshop debate exploring perceptions around the issues the project proposed to explore. Several Advisory Group members gave presentations, expressing their point of view.

Following the workshop, Judith Johnson then submitted a first draft to the advisory group who fed back to her on the script. Much of the inspiration for Michael's story within 'Starfish' came from Lester Ferkins' presentation on the workshop day. Ellis Ferkins, Lester's son, died from v-CJD in 2002.
