Stills from the film of Mind the Gap 2011

Tom Hartley (Scientist) York

"I enjoyed participating in this event. The audience for our event was made up entirely of motivated adults. Mainly 60+, some with concerns about their own memories and experience of caring for people with Alzheimer's. The concept works well - the audience were fully engaged, and the content of the play prompted them to ask interesting and important questions and to share their own views on ethical and scientific issues in memory. I think this is an excellent was of engaging a wide audience in some key questions"

Beryl Nairn (Audience Member) York

"Dear Y Touring, I am compelled to write and let you know how marvellous 'Mind The Gap' was when I saw it at York Picturehouse Cinema 17.3.11 (recorded from The Albert Hall). Every single issue to do with mental health is contained in the most perfect piece of Art! It was moving, challenging, provocative, entertaining, compassionate, informative and linguistically spot on. Everybody deserves an entitlement to see this production and I am determined to press for it to be available as a DVD. The after show discussion was also stimulating and enjoyable. Bravo! Please pass on my sincere congratulations to everyone involved! Thank you."

Tony Picturehouse Manager, York

"I thought Mind the Gap was a good idea and event - even if the numbers were slightly disappointing."

Isabel Christie (Scientist) London

"I really liked the concept. Debate wise, I thought it was good too. I hope there is a future for this kind of event. I guess inspiring kids to continue with science subjects at school might be a good outcome. The play was very exciting and interesting so maybe the scientist could get a chance to sell their career a little, especially by relating it to the exciting issues raised in the play."

Feedback from Gillian Pearson (Facilitator) Oxford

"I like the idea of cinema and debate for an adult audience. The Picturehouse audience are definitely the sort that like this type of event. The film production was very good and would be an excellent resource for other venues. I'm sure science centres and science festival organisers would be very keen to use it along with local scientists. As we discussed, community groups with national networks such as WI or Guides/Scouts could also be tried."

Feedback from Liz Jeavans (Facilitator) Southampton

"I felt that the event was very engaging for the audience involved. The drama production was very well written. It was a good story with some interesting characters and it was also very well produced - it was engaging and made me think about the issues involved as I was taken along with the story. I also had a couple of writers in the audience at Southampton and one of them commented on how good the script was. I don't think we would have had such a fruitful discussion if the drama wasn't as strong as it was. The filming of the play worked better than I had anticipated. It came across well. Now that you have the film and the format it can be replicated elsewhere. Having the scientist involved in the discussion is really important and adds a lot to the event, so I would suggest that you can take this to science festivals (for public and schools audiences). It would also be nice if you could take it to a 'non science' audience such as drama clubs/ events. "

Feedback from Abi Bown Playwright Liverpool

"The adult audience present thoroughly engaged with the piece and stayed behind for a lengthy Q&A with Prof Gus Baker and myself. It was Prof Baker’s first experience of a Y Touring Theatre of Debate show and he told me he was impressed with the film, its content and the wider Y Touring context. I think ‘film of the play’ was superbly done given the time allotted to filming and editing - a creative piece of work in its own right without losing any essence of the original piece - if anything the intimate surroundings of the cinema and use of cinematic techniques helped to focus issues more. I loved it."
