Playwright Judith Johnson

Judith’s plays include UGANDA (Royal National Studio/Royal Court); SOMEWHERE (Royal National Theatre /Liverpool Playhouse); ‘THE SINGING GROUP and ‘EXCLUDE ME (Chelsea Theatre); and the musical ‘RELEASE THE BEAT written with composer Karl Lewkowicz (Arcola Theatre). She has written three plays for the Connections Youth Theatre Programme at The Royal National Theatre.
Judith has written six plays for Y-Touring Theatre Company, including a loose trilogy exploring issues of health and science. STARFISH and NOBODY LIVES FOREVER were both performed at the Albert Hall as part of Science Week 2009 and 2010.
Judith’s TV work includes Grange Hill, The Bill and FIRST SEX which was nominated for a children’s BAFTA. She has written a number of radio plays and was a team writer on the BBC World Service Soap WESTWAY. Her film STRAWBERRY FIELDS, co-written with director Frances Lea, will premier at the London Film Festival, October 2011.
Judith recently worked on a play about food for inclusive theatre company Razed Roof, which was performed at Harlow Playhouse March 2011. Her second musical, GOODBYE BARCELONA, written with Karl Lewkowicz, will open at Arcola Theatre, November 2011. She was a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow at Greenwich University and Toynbee Hall 2007-2011, mentoring students with academic writing needs.
