About Maggie Alexander
Maggie Alexander joined Breakthrough as Director of Policy, Education and Influencing in February 2007.
Following a period of research in toxicology and neuropathology at the Wellcome Research Laboratories and four years in biomedical publishing in the UK, Africa and the Caribbean, Maggie has worked for the past 24 years in health and medical charities ranging from occupational and environmental health to cancer and neurology.
Maggie has been a trustee of several charities in a range of roles including Chair of Women’s Health, Vice Chair of the Telephone Helplines Association and Chair of the Neurological Alliance.
Maggie was Chief Executive of the Brain and Spine Foundation from 2002-2007 and was responsible for setting up the neurological nurse-led Brain and Spine Helpline, the publication of more than 30 specialist publications on neurological disorders and was extensively involved in the development of the first national service framework for long-term and neurological conditions.
As Director of Policy, Education & Influencing, Maggie leads an award-winning team of 23 responsible for Breakthrough’s influencing work and campaigns and for developing a wide range of user involvement initiatives that underpin all of Breakthrough’s work. She is currently Chair of the Breast Working Group of the Improving Cancer Outcomes Strategy Group and has recently taken up the role of Chair of the NICE Familial Breast Cancer Guideline Development Group.
